How Handcrafted Flutes Are Made and What Makes Them Unique
When people first discover my handcrafted flutes, one of the questions I'm asked most often is, "How are they actually made?" It's a fair question because every flute I create has its own character, its own voice and its own story.
In a world where so many instruments are mass produced, I take a very different approach. Every handmade Native American flute I create is crafted individually, with care, patience and respect for the materials I'm working with. There are no production lines or shortcuts here. I spend time getting to know every piece of wood before I even begin shaping it. Rather than trying to force the timber into becoming something it isn't, I prefer to work with its natural features. Shaping the Flute by Hand
Once I've selected the timber, the careful shaping begins. This is where precision matters. Every measurement affects the sound, balance and feel of the flute. Small adjustments can make a remarkable difference, so I work slowly and deliberately throughout the process.
Creating the sound chamber and finger holes requires accuracy, but for me, building a flute is about far more than measurements alone. It is about creating an instrument that feels alive in the hands of the person who will eventually play it.
More Than a Craft, It's a Personal Journey
One part of the process that means a great deal to me happens long before the finishing touches are applied. As I work, I allow inspiration to guide each stage of the build. Many years ago, I was fortunate enough to learn from a dear friend and mentor who shared not only the practical skills of crafting and playing these beautiful instruments, but also a way of approaching the process with thoughtfulness, respect and purpose.
That lesson has stayed with me ever since.
