Creating a Native American Style Flute: A Journey of Connection and Intention
==========================================================================
Creating a Native American style flute is not just a craft for me; it is a profound journey of connection and intention. Each flute tells a unique story, shaped by the materials, the environment, and the intentions of both the maker and the future guardian. In this post, I will explore my process of crafting these flutes, emphasising the importance of collaboration and the wisdom of Mother Earth.

The Commissioning Process
-------------------------
The journey begins with the commissioning process, where I closely collaborate with the person who will receive the flute. If they express a desire for a flute that symbolises healing, this intention will be woven into the flute throughout the entire creation process. Through open, meaningful conversations, we create a flute together that embodies the essence of the individual's aspirations and needs.
Tuning into Nature
Crafting a flute involves more than just physical creation; it requires tuning into nature's signs. When I enter a forest to find the right wood, I pay attention to my surroundings. If I am drawn to a bird singing, I will follow that song and often find the perfect piece of wood for the flute. Nature communicates in many ways, and for me, it is vital in shaping the instrument's journey and voice.
The Crafting Process
Once the wood is selected, the crafting begins. Before I shape each flute, I reconnect with the intentions for it. As the process unfolds, the magic continues to flow. This stage is filled with quiet mindfulness. Every cut, burn, and carve is made with purpose, allowing the flute to evolve as an expression of both myself and the future guardian.
A Moment of Reflection
Once the flute is completed, I return to Nature with it and play some songs and prayers of gratitude to Mother Earth. I reflect on my journey during the crafting process. (Yes, I do feel these flutes have genders.) Every flute has a creation story that details my own journey's feelings during the crafting. This narrative serves as a bridge between the maker and the guardian. Whatever I am feeling and experiencing becomes part of the flute’s memory. I feel it is important for the guardian to be aware of this and how it is woven into the flute together with their intentions. I also give names to all the flutes that reflect their creation story, personality, and presence.
Listening to Mother Earth
Listening to the wisdom of Mother Earth remains a guiding principle throughout the creation process. This connection is part of what makes each flute truly unique. Mother Earth shares her wisdom all the time, and if we wish to carry this wisdom, we must learn to listen with our hearts and with gratitude. This was one of the most important lessons my mentor and friend shared with me over 30 years ago. (More on that in another blog post!) This beautiful message has been a beacon for me in almost every part of my life. Weaving the stories and wisdom of Mother Earth into each flute is such an honour. It truly helps create the unique voice of each flute. They are not just instruments; they are healing tools, a physical expression of the stories and intentions that shape our lives.
The Spiritual Connection
Creating a flute is a deeply spiritual experience. Each step in the process is infused with intention and mindfulness. I often find myself reflecting on the connection between the flute, the wood, and the person who will play it. This spiritual bond enhances the flute's voice and makes it resonate with deeper meaning.
The Role of Intention
Intention plays a crucial role in the crafting of each flute. As I work, I focus on the desires and dreams of the future guardian. This focus shapes the flute's character and sound. I believe that when we infuse our creations with intention, they become more than just objects; they become vessels for our hopes and dreams.
Connecting with the Community
Part of my journey also involves connecting with others who share a passion for music and spirituality. I often host workshops where participants can learn about flute making and playing. These gatherings are filled with laughter, sharing, and a sense of community. It warms my heart to see others discover the joy of creating and playing their own flutes.
The Healing Power of Music
Music has an incredible healing power. When I play the flute, I feel a sense of peace wash over me. It is as if the music carries my thoughts and emotions into the world. I encourage others to explore this healing aspect of music. Playing the flute can be a meditative practice, allowing us to connect with our inner selves and the world around us.
Embracing the Journey
The journey of creating a Native American style flute is one of growth and discovery. Each flute I craft teaches me something new about myself and the world. I embrace the challenges and joys that come with this art form. It is a continuous learning process, and I am grateful for every moment spent in this creative space.

In the end, every flute is a testament to the journey of its creation. It carries the stories, intentions, and dreams of both the maker and the guardian. Let us honour this connection and continue to share the gift of music with the world.
The Importance of Craftsmanship
Craftsmanship is at the heart of flute making. Each flute is a reflection of my dedication and skill. I take pride in using traditional techniques while also infusing my own style. This blend creates flutes that are not only beautiful but also resonate with authenticity. The choice of materials, the design, and the finishing touches all contribute to the final product.
The Influence of Environment
The environment plays a significant role in the flute-making process. The sounds of nature, the feel of the wood, and even the weather can influence how I create. I often find that certain woods resonate with specific emotions or intentions. This connection to the environment enhances the flute's voice and adds depth to its story.
The Journey of Learning
Learning is an integral part of my flute-making journey. Each flute teaches me something new. I constantly seek to improve my skills and expand my knowledge. This journey of learning is not just about technique; it is also about understanding the deeper meanings behind the craft. I am always open to new ideas and perspectives, which enrich my work and my connection to the flutes.
The Legacy of Flute Making
Flute making is a tradition that has been passed down through generations. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to honour this legacy. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to inspire others to connect with this beautiful craft. It is my belief that through flute making, we can create a lasting impact on our communities and the world.
