To Soar Upon the Wind
The creation of this flute has been all about seeing whatever it is we are experiencing from a different perspective. To look beyond the obvious and delve deep into what is hidden. When I first started peeling the bark off this piece of Ash wood the colours and patterns that were for the first time coming to light were such an inspiration. Just as I live my life and at times decide to shed my skin and look what’s going on within myself and how I feel the world around me. Not always easy and not always beautiful. Sometimes its just below the surface and at others much deeper but wherever these hidden gems are they are always incredibly revealing and helpful as I grow throughout this life. So just as birds take flight and see the world from a different point of view we too can learn from them and in this seeing we are better able to overcome and move around and through the obstacles that come before us. In honour of this journey I name this flute,
To Soar Upon the Wind
She is in the key of F# tuned to 432Hz. I foraged the Ash branch with much care and gratitude from a fallen tree near my home here in Cornwall. The inlay on the flute is Turquoise to honour the wide open sky above us. The Bird totem is handcrafted from Sugar Maple, lovingly foraged by my dad in Upstate New York. He has eyes of Malachite to represent the lush richness of Mother Earth reflected in his eyes as he soars high above. The totem is secured to the flute using lace from North American White-tailed Deer. The feathers are of Crow foraged by myself. These beautiful, wise and playful birds help us to see and understand what is often overlooked and hidden. May the songs and prayers of this flute connect us with the winds so that we may soar to new heights.
